Rio de Janeiro has a population of about 6.2 million residents, according to Brazil's last national census. Tourism here keeps breaking its own records: in 2025 the city welcomed roughly 12.5 million visitors of every kind, and more than 2.1 million international travellers landed in the state of Rio, the highest figure ever recorded. That keeps Rio the most sought-after destination in Brazil. The city is famous for its beaches, its nightlife, its culture and its icons: Sugarloaf Mountain, Corcovado and the Christ statue. To tell the truth, there is no single best time of year to visit Rio. The climate does change, but temperatures tend to swing between moderate and very hot. It really depends on what you want from your trip.
Summer: November to February
November to February or early March is considered summer in Brazil. In Rio, average temperatures range between 25 and 30 degrees, but on the hottest days of December and January the thermometer passes 40 degrees and the heat index climbs higher still. For some people this heat is uncomfortable; for others, it is exactly why they visit Rio at the height of summer.
Humidity is also high during the summer, which can bring storms and heavy rain almost every day. But these do not last long and do not disrupt beach life too much. The sea is also at its warmest at this time of year.
Carnival has no fixed date. It follows the church calendar and always lands 47 days before Easter Sunday, which is why it moves around from year to year and can fall anywhere between early February and early March. In 2027 it comes early: the party runs from Friday February 5 to Tuesday February 9, Ash Wednesday is February 10, and the champions' parade at the Sambadrome closes the season on February 13. If you are traveling to Rio specifically to join the famous street parties, book far in advance and expect the highest prices of the year for flights and accommodation. Otherwise, visit at another time.
New Year's Eve is the other giant party of the season, and it keeps growing. For the turn into 2026 the city counted about 2.6 million people on Copacabana beach alone and more than 5 million across the stages set up around the city, and Rio holds the Guinness record for the largest New Year's celebration in the world. If that is your plan, wear white like everyone else and book your bed months ahead.
Rio's beaches fill up in the summer.

Autumn: March to May
This is one of the best periods to travel to Rio. March is still hot but pleasant, and humidity levels drop steadily. You can expect temperatures of 25 to 30 degrees and cooler evenings. During these months beach life is still going strong, but with smaller crowds and lower prices.
If you missed Carnival, there is still plenty of nightlife at this time of year, both outdoors on the beaches and in the clubs. Autumn is the best time to visit Rio.

Winter: June to August
During the winter months of June to August, average temperatures are around 22 degrees, although the nights can sometimes be slightly chilly. This is also the least humid period of the year, with less rain.
You might expect this to be the quietest period, but it is very popular with Europeans and North Americans who come here for their summer vacation. The busiest months are June and July, although you can still find reasonable prices. This is also the best time for surfing, since the ocean and the waves are in their most ideal condition of the year. This is winter??

Spring: September to Early November
September to November is another excellent time to visit Rio de Janeiro. These are among the calmest months of the year for tourism here, well away from Carnival and from the New Year's crush, so prices tend to be softer and rooms easier to find. This is a transitional time of year, with minimal rain and wonderfully pleasant temperatures that usually settle around 20 degrees.
No matter which season of the year you choose to visit Rio, you will arrive at a great time. The weather is almost always lovely and the sea is warm. There are events and nightlife for every person and every taste, along with plenty of nature and scenery.
